Transitional Cell Carcinoma of the Upper Urinary Tract

Abstract
Urothelial tumors of the upper urinary tract are relatively rare. Nineteen patients with transitional cell carcinoma of the upper urinary tract operated upon at Chonnam University Medical School Hospital during 9 years between January, 1978 and December, 1986 are reviewed.
There were 17 men and 2 women, with an age range of 12 to 67 years (mean 48.7 years). The most common presenting symptom was hematuria (89.5%). Urographically, nonvisualization of the kidney was encountered in 57.9 per cent and filling defect in 26.3 per cent. Treatment consisted of nephroureterectomy with bladder cuff excision (9 patients), nephroueterectomy with total cystectomy and ideal conduit (3 patients), distal ureterectomy with bladder cuff excision (2 patients), and segmental resection and end-to-end anastomosis of the urethra (1 patients).
Eight patients had stage A, 4 had stage B, 3 had stage C, and 4 had stage D tumors. Fourteen patients were followed for .2 months to 7 years or until death. The 2-year and 5-year survival rate were 42.9 per cent and 25 per cent, respectively. Patient survival was correlated well with grade and stage of tumor.
